Zaria Terry and Jenna Russell were all smiles before the 25-meter breaststroke event as Monona took on Shorewood last week. The All-City Swim Meet is this weekend at the Hill Farm Swim Club. The All-City Dive meet wrapped up on Wednesday, with Monona taking 5th, their best finish since 2007. Monona's Trevor Sisson won his third diving title. Photo submitted by Peg Thompson

"We're damned lucky we live here!" | 7.21
As I mentioned via twitter Monday night, the Monona Council meeting featured an all-star lineup in the 'appearance' portion of the agenda. It's not unusual for the council to hear zero appearances at a meeting, but on July 19 they welcomed Cathy Karr, Dick Licthfeld and Joe Chern, three of the more vocal and familiar faces in 'appearances'. Cathy and Dick were concerned with a TIF district funding, but Joe Chern was speaking to thank the Monona EMTs for taking care of him after he was attacked by bees while cleaning his gutters. You can view his fantastic comments (including the title quote) at the Monona TV website, about 7 minutes into the 7.19 meeting video, and I highly recommend doing so! - am
MG payroll mistakes | 7.19
You may have heard rumors about some payroll mistakes at the Monona Grove School District recently. Superintendent Craig Gerlach addressed that issue at last week's school board meeting, and while it appears there was something to the rumors, it's no surprise the rumors were greatly exaggerated (depending on who was spreading them)... You can find or hear rumors just about anywhere, but here is our news coverage on the issue, complete with the actual initial estimates on the payroll mistakes. -am
Vacation from vacation | 7.19
After a long week of fishing, it's back to the grind... Must be a good vacation when you need a vacation to recover. And apparently spending a week in the woods destroys keyboarding skills... Anyways, thanks to Craig for holding down the fort in my absence. Jumping back into the fire with a big cannon-ball at tonight's Monona city council meeting. -am
Opinion Friday a day early | 7.15
As a special treat to our readers, we have opinion Friday on Thursday afternoon. Thrilling, I know! In our opinion, we think the smoking ban is great - and we want you to get out and show businesses you think it's great by patronizing them. Sunny wants you to support the All-City Food Drive, and in light of the ongoing disaster in the gulf of Mexico, Heather Gates of Natural Step Monona wants us to all take a good look at what we can do to reduce our dependence on oil. – CC

Axle Grease + Great Cause | 7.14
I am to understand that in the greater Monona Grove area, Axle Grease is what's known as a "big deal." I am also very much aware they do not play a lot of shows these days. So those of you who are Axle Grease junkies can get your fix and also help out a great cause. Axle Grease will be playing a benefit concert on July 24 to raise money for the American Cancer Society, in honor of the late Dr. Gerald Derus, who is the father of two band members. Adam has the story on the event and a summation of why Dr. Derus was a well-respected man in Monona for many years. – CC

Worth the wait | 7.14
Our freelance reporter, Tim Neuenschwander, has done the bulk of our reporting on hockey, including a wonderful story on Cottage Grove's Jessie Vetter's hockey career last August. Tim followed up with Vetter on her Olympic experience and got another great story. Enjoy! – CC

Natural Step Monona | An Olio on Oil
The BP spill has sparked much thought and conversation. It has also, at times, sparked in me a physical reaction. As I go through my day, I can be interrupted with a “jolt of BP,” finding myself horrified anew, as if learning of the spill for the first time. Ka-thunk, ka-thunk, I hear my heart. My muscles tense, and sometimes my eyes well: I could cry sweet crude. After nearly three months, the magnitude and recklessness of the event and its expanding consequences still stun and haunt me.
